Have you ever been confused when looking at a coffee shop menu? The three items—cappuccino, latte, and flat white—often appear side by side. All three are made from the same ingredients, espresso and milk, but their preparation methods are quite different and result in unique flavors. Let's discuss each one so you won't be confused!
Cappuccino: The Classic with Lots of Foam
Cappuccino is one of the most classic and easily recognizable coffee drinks. It consists of espresso, steamed milk, and a thick layer of milk foam on top. It is typically served in a small cup of about 150 ml. Due to the abundant foam, cappuccino has a light texture on top and a still fairly strong coffee flavor. It’s perfect for those who enjoy a creamy sensation but still want the coffee flavor to shine through.
Latte: The Soft Favorite of Many
If you prefer coffee with a lighter flavor and a dominant milk taste, latte is the perfect choice. Compared to cappuccino, latte has more milk and only a little foam on top. That's why it has a creamier taste and a natural sweetness from the milk. Latte is usually served in a larger glass, around 200–300 ml, so you can enjoy it longer. Many people also like to add syrups like vanilla or caramel to their latte for an extra flavor touch.
Flat White: Smooth but Strong
Flat white may still sound unfamiliar to some people, but this drink is very popular in Australia and New Zealand. At first glance, it looks similar to a latte, but a flat white actually uses a double shot of espresso with very finely steamed milk (microfoam) without thick foam on top. Its size is usually similar to a cappuccino, around 150 ml. Since it uses more espresso and less milk, the coffee flavor is bolder but still smooth and creamy when sipped. Perfect for those who want a strong coffee experience without the bitterness.
